I am a bilateral implantee with Kanso , married and settled in Bangalore. My Hearing Loss was detected when I was 7 years old. For 21 years I was using hearing aid on my left ear and suffered complete hearing loss on my right ear. My world changed when in April 2014, I underwent cochlear implantation under the advice of Dr Mohan kameshwaram . Today I am able to interact with the social circle without asking people to repeat constantly. It brought me immense joy, self esteem, confidence when I could hear the thunder, sound of the running tap and distinguish sounds which I could not do with the hearing aids. Cochlear Implant is a wonderful technology which can substantially change a hearing impaired person's life. With proper awareness, people will come forward for cochlear implantation surgery. When the chance for Cochlear implant comes their way, I urge them to go for it as it is a life changing moment. I thank Dr Mohan Kameshwaram and MERF for bringing in the joy of sounds in my life. My Ambition: I am to meet more people like me and create awareness about CI surgery.

May I take this opportunity to say my sincere thanks to you and each and every single member of your dedicated team and also to give my honest feedback which is nothing but appreciation of you and your team’s excellent work. I lost hearing on one side over a fairly short period and was living with one sided hearing for almost a year before I decided to get a Cochlear implant (CI) done for my single sided deafness (SSD). During this time, I have personally researched and met with professionals including doctors and audiologists both in India and UK. I was convinced just like some of the study results and patients I had met with CI for SSD, and decided to take this up. Having decided to have CI, my next stage was to decide the surgical and audiologist team. Since the use of CI for SSD is a fairly recent concept this was not funded in NHS in UK, where I live. Also some of the features in my scan demanded a more skillful surgeon and your publication regarding this as early as 2005 pointed the decision in your direction. Also surgeons I met abroad were aware of you and your teams excellent work. Your excellent reputation even among the well recognized names abroad simply made my job easier in identifying you as my surgeon. I should mention here a special word about your approach to my case when I met you the first time which gave me lot of confidence in you. I am aware of your accolades from many reputed public organizations including the very meritorious BC Roy and Parma Shree awards. As a fellow professional I can relate to the importance of these. When ever I mentioned your name amongst my ENT friends and colleagues both in India and abroad I heard nothing but appreciation of you and your team’s excellent skill and work. Me and my family have been looked after very well through out my surgery including pre- op, post-op and during follow up. I should mention a special word of thanks to Dr.Jeganathan, Consultant Anesthetist for taking a very personal care. Problems with SSD & My Objective with CI; Sir, even though I managed to carry on for a year with SSD, it did get me off guard at times. Some thought I am rude when I didn’t respond and I had to modify a lot at work and even avoid social gatherings, conferences and dinners. The scariest thing happened was that it potentially put me in danger in traffic in India. It was very surreal when I started hearing through my implant. Of course its early days but I am hopeful that I will be able to completely regain hearing almost back to normal. I think this would enable me to work normally for the rest of my life and I would be able to enjoy a good social life. My path to my objective; To my understanding, as I was told in UK, that it takes a long time to get used to CI and hence the auditory re habilitation happens over a period of months to years and each mapping session is 1 to 3 month intervals. This is where I do not have enough words to appreciate your audiology teams work esp Mr. Ranjith, who was extremely flexible and approachable for all my problems. Some of the sessions are so exhausting but the team worked with the same smile and enthusiasm even at late hours just to get me on to track to enable me to return to UK. Their constant reassurances and encouragement is really a driving force. I never faced an iota of hesitation in arranging to see me anytime I wanted even at very short notices. I wish the team in MERF to continue their successful journey for many more years to come. May God bless you all to keep doing what you do best.
